This good looking couple had a backyard wedding along the Ashley River in Charleston SC. They were married at sunset at a family friend’s home.
Backyard Wedding Along the Ashley River
Because they were married so late in the evening and we would not have much light after the ceremony, we did all the portraits beforehand. Therefore, the couple had their little intimate moment seeing each other for the first time on the wedding day. Afterwards we had plenty of time to get all the family portraits and bride and groom portraits taken before the ceremony even happened. I love when couples plan for their ceremony to occur so close to sunset. The light is best in the last 2 hours of the day. In fact, you’re unlikely to get that sparkly golden light at any earlier time.
Sunset Ceremony
It was a good thing that we did all the portraits beforehand. After the ceremony we had less than 30 minutes left of light, and after the couple finished greeting all of their guests the light was completely gone. Because we had finished all the portraits, the couple could relax for the rest of the evening & mingle with guests right away. This is why I always encourage a first look.
Mingling with Guests
You only have so many hours on your wedding day to actually enjoy your friends and family. Therefore, it is only smart to finish all your portraits early. In fact, one of my favorite parts of the day to photograph is the cocktail hour, because of this. I love capturing everyone’s smiles, hugs, and general happiness. Cocktail hour is the best time for that! If you are unsure how to plan your timeline, ask your photographer to help you! One of the first things I discuss with my couples is how to make a schedule that will maximize the enjoyment of the day.
