Let’s talk about how we should be celebrating all skin tones in wedding photography. One of the most important things I’ve learned in my 20+ years as a photographer is that people want to feel seen… and not just in the literal sense. They want to feel recognized, understood, and beautifully captured for who they are. And unfortunately, not every couple has felt that way when looking through wedding photographer portfolios… especially BIPOC couples.

I’ve heard it directly from couples here in the Pacific Northwest: it can be tough to find photographers whose work reflects a range of skin tones, cultures, and love stories. And even tougher to find someone with real experience photographing darker skin in a way that does it justice.
That matters. A lot.
As a white photographer, I think it’s important to acknowledge that this industry hasn’t always done a great job representing everyone equally. It’s not just about filling a portfolio with “diverse” images… it’s about knowing how to light, edit, and approach each session with the understanding that every person, every couple, deserves to look their best in photos that feel natural and true to them.

Photographing different skin tones well isn’t just a bonus skill—it’s a basic responsibility. I’ve spent years working with people of all backgrounds, and I’m proud to say that photographing people of color isn’t new or unfamiliar to me. I know how to work with natural light and flash to highlight darker skin tones beautifully. I pay attention to editing choices that maintain richness and vibrance without washing out or overcorrecting. And more than anything, I listen. I ask. I care.
You won’t hear me making a big deal out of how “inclusive” I am. I just believe that your wedding photos should reflect who you are… not a photographer’s default settings. You should see your joy, your culture, your beauty, your people.
If you’re someone who’s felt hesitant because you haven’t seen yourself reflected in the portfolios out there, I hear you. And I’d love to show you that you can have wedding photos that feel like you.
Below, you’ll find a selection of images featuring couples of color I’ve worked with, each one unique, beautiful, and full of love.
