This DIY North Plains backyard wedding was the perfect reminder that the best celebrations happen when couples stay true to themselves. The entire day took place at the groom’s parents’ home, creating a relaxed atmosphere that felt welcoming from beginning to end. One of my team photographers documented this beautiful day while I was photographing a wedding in North Carolina, but editing the images made me feel like I had also been there!
A Relaxed Celebration Among the Trees
The couple wanted a wedding that felt natural, spontaneous, and free from a rigid timeline. Instead of planning every minute, they focused on simply enjoying time with the people they love. That easygoing spirit carried through every part of the day.
Both the bride and groom got ready at the house before seeing each other for the first time during the ceremony. The bride’s purple hair paired beautifully with her ethereal gown, creating a look that perfectly matched their dark and moody celestial theme. The groom added rich touches of red throughout his attire, giving his look just the right amount of contrast and edge.
A small canopy of trees offered shelter for the ceremony, while the sunshine wrapped the guests in warm afternoon light.
Golden Light and Personal Details
The reception unfolded beneath rows of mature trees that almost resembled an orchard. As the afternoon turned into golden hour, warm light filtered through the branches and transformed the entire backyard into something magical.
Nearly every detail reflected the couple’s creativity. The wedding was almost entirely DIY, making the celebration feel even more personal. The only exceptions were the incredible cake from Cascadia Kitchen and the delicious catering provided by the groom’s workplace.
The evening was filled with meaningful traditions and plenty of laughter. The first dances were especially sweet, including the parent dances. The cake cutting included just enough playful cake smashing to make everyone smile. Guests also loved the shoe game, which always brings out hilarious answers and big laughs. Toasts from close friends wrapped up our photo time, but I’m sure more celebrating and karaoke happened into the night!
This DIY North Plains backyard wedding proved that beautiful weddings do not need elaborate timelines or extravagant venues. Sometimes all you need is family, good food, beautiful trees, and the freedom to celebrate exactly the way you want.
