Steady State Studios asked me to help photograph this Hindu Wedding in Portland. I always enjoy photographing the wedding traditions of other cultures, so I was excited to be a part of this special day! This wedding was actually held at a temple in Hillsboro, but it has since moved to Portland proper.
Indian Wedding at Portland Balaji Temple
The Portland Balaji Temple is vibrant and colorful and makes for some colorful wedding photography! Which we all know is right up my alley. Shortly after I arrived, the bride and groom were separated to perform some traditions alone with their families. Then they were brought to the mandap, but a curtain was kept between them so they couldn’t see each other. Finally they were able to see each other and then there were a few ceremonies the two of them shared together. They showered each other with a lot of rice, symbolizing fertility, prosperity, and happiness. It felt very lighthearted and happy, with lots of smiles and laughter. At the end, they went outside and the groom showed the bride the double stars of Vasishta and Arundhati. The constellation is a symbol of the closeness marriage brings to a couple.
