This Indian Roce Ceremony in Vancouver was such a treat to photograph! These two are just the cutest and most thoughtful couple. I loved spending the evening with their friends and family to celebrate the groom before their wedding the following day.
Indian Roce Ceremony in Vancouver
The Roce is a ceremony that typically occurs the evening before the wedding. It is a ritual that celebrates the groom and prepares him for marriage. A fresh coconut is cut, and coconut milk is applied to the groom’s skin. It symbolizes the end of bachelorhood, and a washing away of sins and purifying of the soul. The mother of the groom starts by drawing a cross on the forehead and then pours a few drops in each ear. It is believed to bless and clear the ears so that they can listen to each other. This ritual is then followed by family, siblings, friends, and guests. They each take turns to anoint the groom with the Roce. It often ends with all of the remaining Roce being poured on their head!
That’s just what happened! Afterward, a garden hose was used to spray him off. Everyone had some cocktails and snacks while the groom showered. The bride gave everyone some really thoughtful gifts during this time as well.
Gathered Around The Table
Once the groom returned, we took some portraits of everyone in the backyard. Then everyone gathered around the table for a feast. I got to partake and I must say that it was the best lamb Biryani I’ve ever had. It was all very tasty! There were also chicken lollipops, butter chicken, and raita salad. The bride’s brother made their family’s secret Bullar recipe, which is a traditional Swedish pastry. Also very delicious and a big hit!
But I think the jello “shots” might have been the biggest hit of all! I call them “shots” because it was made in a big pan rather than in shot cups, and everyone scooped them out with a spoon. Finally, everyone headed outside for some late-night dancing.
