I was so excited to photograph this Indian Haldi Ceremony in Hillsboro, Oregon recently!   I photographed the festivities over 2 days.  The first morning began with this Pithi Ceremony, followed by the Sagai Ceremony and Sangeet in the evening!  After which, the official wedding was on the second day.  It was all so colorful!

The Haldi, or Pithi, Ceremony is an important ritual that signifies new beginnings.  During the ceremony, a paste made of haldi (turmeric), is applied to the couple’s hands, feet, and face by close family members.  It is typically applied using mango leaves.  The arms are crossed when applying it to the hands and feet.  In addition to representing new beginnings, haldi is also considered a beautification ritual.  The turmeric paste leaves skin glowing and refreshed.  Haldi is also believed to keep away evil spirits, to purify the heart and soul, as well as to ward off pre-wedding jitters.

It was so much fun to be a part of this special tradition.  Blessings were given and family surrounded them in the home.  After all the family members applied haldi to the bride, she was lifted into the air and carried away.  Afterwards it was the groom’s turn!  Guys need glowing skin too! I loved the yellow, red and orange color theme.  Not only were there decorations and symbolic items in these colors around the home, but many of the guests were wearing these colors.  The color yellow is associated with new beginnings, peace and prosperity.  Red signifies good fortune and prosperity, fertility, as well as passion.  In addition, red is associated with Durga, a revered Hindu goddess who symbolizes power, strength and valor.
