Should you use AI generated headshots? I recently took the plunge and ordered some AI generated headshots of myself. Everyone in my online photography network group was sharing their results. I was in literal tears over all the hilarious mishaps. Many people were posting images showing them with 3 or 4 arms, hair for earrings, 20 extra teeth, and hot dog fingers.
But some were GOOD! Curiosity got the best of me and I uploaded a bunch of photos of myself. I tried my best to follow the guidelines for submission. Unfortunately I did not get any extra arms. I did get a few extra teeth, and a different hairstyle in every single photo. But I was most shocked to find that many of the images looked very similar to real-life headshots I’ve had taken of myself over the years. So, I decided to “write” this blog post to show some comparisons.*
As a photographer, I have always known the importance of a professional headshot. And I have had more than my fair share taken of me over my career. I constantly update my headshots to match my website, my branding, and for sharing to social media. Moreover, there is a big difference between a friend taking a snapshot with their phone, and even between a fellow wedding photographer taking a headshot with their pro camera, versus hiring someone that specializes in headshots. They all have their place, but I’ve tried them all! And while AI delivers some stunning options, they are all lacking in what matters most… the soul and personality of the subject.
In the age of digital communication, where our first impression of a person is often formed online, the use of headshots has become increasingly important. A headshot is an image of a person’s head and shoulders. These images are typically used for professional purposes such as a LinkedIn profile or a company website. In recent years, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) generated headshots has become popular. However, while these images may appear to be of high quality, there are several reasons why opting for professional photography headshots is a better choice.
Firstly, AI-generated headshots lack the authenticity and individuality that a professional photographer can capture. While AI can generate thousands of different headshots, they lack the personal touch that comes with working with a professional photographer. A professional photographer can capture a person’s personality, character, and unique features in a way that an AI program cannot. A professional photographer can work with the subject to create a relaxed and natural setting. This results in a more authentic and genuine image.
Secondly, AI-generated headshots can be misleading. While they may look impressive, they often do not accurately represent the person in question. For example, an AI-generated headshot may make a person look younger or more attractive than they are in reality. This can create false expectations and lead to disappointment when the person meets their clients or colleagues in person. Professional photography headshots, on the other hand, accurately capture the person’s appearance. This ensures that there are no surprises when meeting in person.
Thirdly, AI-generated headshots lack the attention to detail that professional photographers bring to their work. Professional photographers have an eye for detail, ensuring that the lighting, angles, and composition of the image are perfect. This level of attention to detail ensures that the image is of the highest quality and that the person looks their best. An AI program, on the other hand, is limited by its algorithms. It may miss important details that a human eye would pick up on.
Fourthly, professional photography headshots offer a personal touch that AI-generated headshots simply cannot match. Professional photographers can work with the subject to create a unique and personalized image. They can tailor the lighting and composition to suit the person’s features and personality. This ensures that the image captures their essence. This personal touch creates an emotional connection between the subject and the viewer, making the image more engaging and memorable.
Finally, professional photography headshots offer a higher level of professionalism than AI-generated headshots. While AI-generated headshots may be impressive, they lack the human touch that comes with working with a professional photographer. A professional headshot creates a sense of trust and credibility. Which is essential for anyone looking to make a positive first impression in their professional life.
In conclusion, while AI-generated headshots may be convenient and cost-effective, they miss the mark. They lack the authenticity, individuality, and attention to detail that professional photography headshots provide. A professional headshot offers a personal touch. It captures the essence of the person, and offers a higher level of professionalism than an AI-generated headshot. For anyone looking to make a positive first impression in their professional life, investing in a professional photography headshot is a wise choice.
