This wedding at Hoyt Arboretum had everything: laughter, sentiment, runners mid-ceremony, bubble guns, and a laminated photo of a pooping dog. It was one of the most heartfelt and memorable celebrations I’ve photographed.
Portraits at Cathedral Park
We started the day at Cathedral Park, a spot the couple originally considered for their ceremony. The groom loves bridges, and while construction meant it wasn’t ideal for a wedding, it was still perfect for portraits. We got beautiful shots underneath the bridge, and on top.
The groom’s two kids joined us and brought their own charm to the session. The son gleefully got semi-trucks to honk from the bridge above. The daughter walked around with a laminated photo of their dog—pooping—tied into her bouquet. It was hilarious and very on-brand for their family energy.
Wedding at Hoyt Arboretum
From there, we headed to the redwood deck for their wedding at Hoyt Arboretum. As the kids made their way down the aisle, a large group of runners came through the trail. Everyone cracked up. It’s a public park, after all. A few more runners popped through mid-ceremony, adding even more laughs.
Before the ceremony officially began, the couple invited guests to take out their phones. The officiant (the bride’s father) called out funny posing prompts for the couple like “the proposal” and “searching for love,” which led to some amazing candid moments. Then, guests were asked to tuck phones away to be fully present.
Personal Vows, Cake, and Celebration
The bride read personal vows to each of the kids. It was one of the most touching moments of the day. After they were officially married, the kids celebrated with bubble guns as everyone cheered.
The daughter gave a sweet toast. Cake was cut and enjoyed. We grabbed a few more portraits in the glowing light before the group headed off to Blade & Timber for dinner and more celebrating.
This wedding at Hoyt Arboretum was a beautiful reminder that love, laughter, and a little flexibility make the perfect day.
