I don’t usually encourage winter portrait sessions—unless they’re for last-minute Christmas cards or unless snow is involved – but this winter engagement session with a WNBA twist was a fun exception. Typically, everyone ends up cold and cranky with red and runny noses, and it can be hard to loosen up and relax for the camera when your muscles are frozen tense lol. But when these two told me the ideas they had for their session, I was all in, even though December was the only time their busy schedules would align.
Winter Engagement Session with a WNBA Twist
They envisioned something bold, rich, and indoors (which, let’s be real, anything indoors isn’t usually my go-to for portrait sessions either). But I had just the places in mind that had been on my radar for quite some time! I just had to make sure I could work out the details. AND… they also wanted to commemorate Leslie’s time in the WNBA by ending the session with something more casual of the two of them on a basketball court. Luckily they were open to this part being outdoors because I also knew just the spot!
Classic Vibes in Unexpected Locations
We started at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in downtown Portland. The lobby is ornate, colorful, and full of drama—the perfect backdrop for the elegant look they had in mind. I’ve had that spot in my back pocket for years, just waiting for the right couple to bring it to life, and these two nailed it.
Next, we headed to a super random but long-thought-of location: the marble staircase next to the giant windows at Lloyd Center Mall. I first noticed it 12 years ago when I moved to Portland, and it always struck me as a fun, unexpected spot for portraits. Turns out it’s a hidden gem—great light, glossy textures, and all kinds of weird charm.
The Familiar Outdoors
Then we chased some soft, misty daylight at Peninsula Park (back to my typical comfort zone!). It was classic winter-in-Portland weather: drizzly but romantic. We embraced the umbrellas and had a blast anyway.
To wrap it all up, we headed to a newly remodeled basketball court so they could honor her time in the WNBA. They changed into jerseys and matching Nikes, and we finished the day with some playful, joy-filled shots on the court.
I’ll be photographing their wedding later this year, and if this session is any preview, it’s going to be an unforgettable one.
